Cebu Wants To Go UpscaleBy Jason A. Martin on January 11th, 2007
Cebu is a popular tourist destination in the Philippines. It looks like the major tourism players there are trying to rework the area to target a more affluent traveler. It’s the goal of many tourist destinations. The thought of luring in travelers with lots of disposable income has become the manta behind the new visions in more places than just Cebu. “We’d like to target a better niche market and avoid the el cheapo tourists,” said Robert Lim Joseph of National Association of Independent Travel Agencies. Joseph said that they would start their target transformation in Japan. The goal is to attract class A tourists, who spend 50-100 times that of a lower class tourist, Joseph said. Joseph admits that for the plan to work Cebu must clean up and take care of the poverty issue. We’ll have to wait and see just how the players in Cebu make this vision come about.
